I have written about the subject of lawn conversion or lawn transformation to a fare thee well on this blog site (Click Here, If You Must)
Other homeowners have also used the sheet-mulching technique (in whole or in part) over the last year or so. The recent article in the Argus reporting that the City of Petaluma had agreed to allow a group of volunteers to "transform" the turf area around the Cavanagh Center caught my attention. Sheet-mulching on City property? Wow!
So, I packed up my gear and visited the site each day. The volunteers managed to pull it off in spite of the temperatures--particularly on Sunday..

The volunteers were all hard workers but one in particular caught my eye. Kelli Loux really got into it...
.
One thing that should be kept in mind is that sheet-mulching is merely an inexpensive and natural way to get rid of a lawn. Once it is in place there are no set rules as to how it is to be landscaped. The sheet mulching merely provides you a new soil base.
Of course, you want to put in low water plants. You can even do a food garden if you want. In the alternative, you could put in a bunch of low maintenance grasses or succulents and be done with it.
The point is that we must get away from lawns because of their water usage.

Comment: Thank you for the valuable information on sheet mulching and lawn conversions. Something that does not need professional help looks like, as we could do it ourselves. A review of all your blogs on this topic was very helpful too. If we can stave off our desire to have exotic plants and in place select Native California ones (many are so beautiful) we would be saving that much more water. One step higher would be to select non allergy causing plants. Gratitude would then spread in the air, instead!
Response: Yes, you can do it yourself. However, I suggest consulting with a landscaper familiar with the sheet-mulching technique. The "mulching formulas" vary sometimes due to underlying soild conditions, terrain, etc. It is money well spent and far far below the cost of traditional landscaping approaches to getting rid of lawns. For additional information on native plants, sheet mulching, and nurseries check out http://web.mac.com/cricketscapes/iWeb/Site/Welcome%20to%20cricketscapes.html

About this blog
Frank Simpson
Frank Simpson is a community observer who comments on scenes or conditions in Petaluma's public areas, streets and neighborhoods. Occasionally, articles are written by (or about the adventures of) The EVEL Twins (Triplets?): Boris--Frank's EVEL Twin and ACE PINS Photographer; Igor--Boris' EVEL Twin & The Real Prince Of Darkness; and Ivan--The Source Before Darkness & Light. The EVEL Twins are sometimes joined by ZELDA--The Real Queen of Mean. Recently, the Twins (two plus one) and Zelda packed their bags and "caught the last train for the coast"...never to be heard from again. However, they do check in from time to time. Fortunately, the Petaluma Fowl & Wildlife Consortium has stepped in to fill the void created by their departure.
